Santo Spirito in Sassia

The hospital complex of the Holy Spirit is located in the district of Borgo, near the Vatican City. Built in the thirteenth century, it boasts a series of stratifications still visible today: in the cellars below the Sistine lanes of the fifteenth century, you can see the archaeological remains of the Horti of Agrippina Maior, a complex of imperial buildings built between the first century B.C. and the first century A.D.

There are two ancient myths about the Tiber Island: according to the first one the island was formed when Tarquinius Superbus was thrown out of the city; the second tells that on board a ship which sailed from Rome to Epidavros in 291 b.C. there was a delegation which comprised some of the wisest men.

An important source, the Regesto farfense, gives information about the inauguration of the building and the name of its founder. The hospital was built in the tenth century by the will of the blessed countryside, a Roman nobleman who founded the monastery in honor of Saints Cosmas and Damian, two medical brothers called anargiri, that is, without money, because they treated the sick free of charge.

Questa zona vanta di numerose stratificazioni a partire dall'epoca pre-repubblicana sino al periodo Rinascimentale e Barocco. La struttura dell'edificio è stat curata da importanti architetti quali Giovanni Mola e Giovanni Antonio de Rossi che edificò l'ospedale delle Donne.

Il complesso ospedaliero del Santo Spirito si trova nel rione di Borgo, nei pressi della Città del Vaticano. Edificato nel XIII secolo, vanta si una serie di stratificazioni visibili ancora oggi: nelle cantine sottostanti le corsie sistine del Quattrocento, è possibile osservare i resti archeologici degli Horti di Agrippina Maior, un complesso di edifici imperiali realizzati tra il I secolo a.C. ed il I sec. d.C.

La struttura ospedale sarebbe sorta nel X secolo per volontà di benedetto campagna, nobile romano che fonda il monastero in onore dei santi Cosma e Damiano, due fratelli medici detti anargiri, cioè senza denaro, perchè curavano gratuitamente i malati.
