The hospital complex of San Giovanni-Addolorata is located on an archaeological site on the Cælius. This area boasts numerous stratifications from the pre-Republican era to the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The structure of the building was taken care of by important architects such as Giovanni Mola and Giovanni Antonio de Rossi who built the Women’s Hospital.
The San Giovanni-Addolorata hospital complex is located in an archaeological area on the Caelio, between the San Giovanni in Laterano square and Via S. Stefano Rotorno, della Navicella and Amba Aradam. In this area, different phases of the history of Rome can be admired, from the pre-republican age to the Renaissance and the Barocco (XVII century). In this area (Regio II), from the I century, a project was carried out, thanks to which new and gorgeous villas were built, some of them belonged to rich families like the Quintili and the Lateran. During the II-III centuries the villas became industrial complexes with orchards for the grape-harvest. It was also built an early Christian chapel with frescoes from the III-V centuries, which portrayed scenes from the Gospel with saints and from the christian life.

In 1216, the cardinal Giovanni Colonna founded the first complex of the future Lateran hospital, and donated it to the religious brotherhood known as Compagnia dei Raccomandati, who had as main mission that of welcoming pilgrims and helping those in need. In 1348, the plague broke out, and the epidemic requested the Compagnia dei Raccomandati to renovate and expand the hospital. During this period, the hospital was called Ospedale dell’Angelo, in honor of the St. Michael the Archangel, from the name of a previous church that was there. In this period, two works were made for to keep them inside the hospital: the sacred marble statue of St. Michael the Archangel and the fresco of an Enthroned Madonna between a bishop and St. Rocco. Between 1630 and 1636 the architect Giovanni Mola (Colderio, 1576 - Roma, 1650), built a new hospital: that of the SS. Salvatore.
Between 1655 and 1656 the architect Giovanni Antonio De Rossi (Roma 1619 -- 1656) built the Ospedale delle Donne, which was an obstetric clinic until the first decade of the XIX century.
During the XVIII century started the decline of the brotherhood, which led to its disbanding in 1804. The management of the hospital complex passed into the hands of the brothers of the Order of San Camillo

LIn the dungeons of the actual San Giovanni district, precisely on the corresponding areas of the Corsia Nuova (Sala Fochi) and of the Corsia Vecchia (Sala Mazzoni), the remains of buildings, dating back to a period between the I and IV century, are still preserved. Thanks to the presence of the Constantinian basilica of the SS. Salvatore (IV century), new smaller basilicas, monasteries, and hospices were built in order to welcome those pilgrims who came to the city from the Via Appia. The construction of the first hospital district goes back to the years between 1338 and 1348: the Ospedale dell’Angelo, linked to the Compagnia dei Raccomandati.
During the following centuries the complex was expanded, always under the direction of the brotherhood, which bought all the buildings located along the arches of the Claudian aqueduct. Between 1902 and 1907 new measures on the complex were promoted. In 1957, the architect Giorgio Francisi led the construction of the new ward of the San Giovanni district. The latest building redevelopment date back to the 2000s.

The first room, located on the first floor of today’s convent, depicts the pictorial cycle of the Works of Mercy, dated to 1588/89 and restored in 2007. On the ground floor there is the ancient pharmacy, dated 1600, which has on the ceiling a fresco with round depicting signs of the zodiac with decorative elements, such as ribbons and shells supported by cupids.
The hospital complex is surrounded by secular and important monuments such as the Church of St. Stefano Rotondo, the oldest circular plan of Rome (V century). The Presidio San Giovanni overlooks the square of San Giovanni in Laterano articulated around the homonymous basilica, the lateran palace and the octagonal Baptistery. The territory occupied by the hospital San Giovanni Addolorata is an area of extraordinary historical and artistic interest, characterized by stratifications and palimpsests corresponding each to a given century, mirror of the different needs that have presented themselves over time.
